How it works
By committing annually to a $100/month sponsorship of a mustang or burro, you help us enormously by supporting our existing rescues so we can continue saving more.
SPONSORSHIP INCLUDES:
A personalized Certificate of Sponsorship with a photo of the horse or donkey you choose and your name.
A 60 minute one-on-one visit to Skydog Ranch to meet the horse or burro you are sponsoring, spend time hanging out with them, take photographs and ask questions of our staff.
If you sponsor more than one horse or burro, you will get one hour with each animal when you visit.
To visit your sponsored equine, you must be a sponsor for at least 9 months. Anyone who wants to see them sooner will have to pay for 9 months ($900) in advance of their visit. We regret that this has become necessary. We need to discourage those sponsoring for one month in order to visit the ranch, then canceling because they don’t actually care about supporting the animals or our work. These tours take up a lot of time from our staff and the important work they do caring for our rescues.
Choosing a Mustang or Burro to Sponsor
You can search for posts about individuals on Instagram or Facebook with a hashtag that combines the word “skydog” with their name (#skydogzebedee #skydognugget). You can also go to the Then & Now page on the website to see their photos and read their biographies. (Note: their pages are currently being updated.)
Sponsor a SKYDOG on Patreon
A great way to sponsor a Skydog is by becoming a patron on Patreon and signing up for the $100/month Lead Mare level. This automatically makes you a sponsor and gives you access to exclusive content that we don’t post on other social media platforms. Each new episode of the Horse Love Podcast is released there, as are special offers on merchandise, and breaking news.
Eloise
Eloise was left behind at the BLM corrals after all the other donkeys had been taken. She had a visible stifle injury, a blessing in its strange way as it brought her home to Skydog. I named her Eloise after the little girl in Eloise at The Plaza. The care and services she receives from us are top-notch for an old donkey with ligament damage and severe osteoarthritis. The prognosis is poor, but as our vet said, Eloise has her size and the amazing healing abilities of donkeys in her favor. Indeed, we’ve seen miracles happen for some our longears. Early treatment seems to have quickly made a difference, so we are optimistic. We are working to get her to the point where she can live comfortably in a pen that is sandy soft and flat with other senior companions. More about Eloise
Fletcher
Fletcher is a senior, whom we found in a kill pen at the same time we were saving two other seniors in another location. We decided to bring him from Kansas to Oklahoma to join them for the freedom ride to Skydog. Fletcher is a sweet guy, but not the kind of horse who gets attention at livestock auctions or kill pens. An elderly bay mustang, not skinny enough to shock anyone, no story to pull at the heart strings. He probably has Cushings, few teeth, and some arthritis from being worked hard, so most people probably only saw vet bills and expensive feeding costs. When old work horses can no longer do their jobs, they are often sent to auction. Some owners would rather wring a few hundred dollars dollars out of what’s left of their lives than give them the peaceful retirement they have earned. There’s nothing plain about a brown bay, Fletcher is beautiful and it is our honor to welcome him to “assisted senior living” at the new ranch in Santa Ynez. More about Fletcher
